Berwyn Hugh Shaw, 83, of Hopedale, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Berwyn was born October 6, 1942 to Freida “Agnes” (McConkey) Shaw and Joseph “Lee” Shaw in Decatur, IL. He graduated from Deland-Weldon High School in 1960. Berwyn married Vicki J. Noe at Deland-Weldon Christian Church, and she survives.
Also surviving are his children, Laura (Robert) Cremeens of Hopedale and Amy Shaw of Binghamton, NY; grandchildren, Brady (Melissa) Cremeens and Taylor (Jacob) Payne; great-grandchildren Cash and Gus Cremeens; and his aunt, Barbara Wallace McConkey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Beverly Hiter and Dallas Shaw; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Roy and Evelyn (Hirstein) Noe; and a dear uncle, Eldon “Pete” McConkey.
As a young man, Berwyn was a salesperson at Bachrach’s Clothing in Decatur, IL which influenced his motivation to be a sharp dresser. He grew up on a farm near Weldon, IL near his grandparents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Love of agriculture was pervasive throughout his life; he spent many years working in the agricultural field. Berwyn completed his working career at State Farm Insurance Companies where he also loved what he did and enjoyed many friends.
When Berwyn was eight years old, he was severely burned in an accident and was fortunate to survive and live a productive and fulfilling life. His wife and family were his joy. Berwyn was an athlete and loved following his kids and grandkids in their sports and other activities. Papa had a reputation for telling the best bear stories to his grandkids.
Berwyn was an optimistic and encouraging “people person.” He participated in and taught the Dale Carnegie course, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” which was formative in his life.
Berwyn was a member of Minier Christian Church for more than 50 years, fulfilling leadership and teaching roles for many of those years. He enthusiastically participated in the 1994-1997 construction of a new church facility and cherished being part of the annual “Lamb of Glory” Easter program. Berwyn loved Lincoln Christian University with all his heart and treasured relationships developed with LCU professors and staff.
The most important facet of Berwyn’s heart and mind was his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and his passion for “Always being prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). Berwyn is now fully restored and safe forever with the Lover of his soul.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 14 from 4:00-6:00 pm and a funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 15 at 10:30 am, both at Minier Christian Church in Minier, IL. His grandson, Pastor Brady Cremeens, will officiate. Burial will be in Orendorff Cemetery, Hopedale, IL.
Memorials may be made to Minier Christian Church or Lincoln Christian Institute.
