Donald Springer Obituary

Donald Wayne Springer, aged 74, passed into eternity on August 24th, 2024 at his home in Minier, Illinois. Don was born on September 12, 1949, in Bloomington, Illinois to Robert and Betty Runyon Springer. He married Nancy Lefler on December 27, 1969, in Colchester, Illinois, Together, they were an amazing team for over 54 years.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew Jeff Moss. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his brother, Kevin (& Missy) Springer of Hopedale; his children, Stephanie (Glenn Kiesewetter) of Willard, Missouri, and Matt Springer of Hopedale; his grandchildren, Calvin (& Anne) Kiesewetter, Sarah (& Troy) Kiesewetter Lindsey, and Jeffrey Springer; two great grandchildren; nieces Jeni (& Brian) Moss Berry, Amanda Springer Woods, and nephew Robert Springer. 

Don graduated from Hopedale High School and continued his education at Spoon River College in Canton.  He honorably served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, where he was stationed aboard the USS LY Spear as a Radioman Second Class. His time in the Navy was marked by a deep commitment to his country and he was proud to have served.

Don had a deep love for farming, community, and his fellow man. He was a fifth-generation farmer known for his hard work and deep knowledge of agricultural practices. He also worked at Rite-Way and Eilts Electric, bringing his strong work ethic, ingenuity, and wit. Don also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Hopedale Fire Department for 46 years and was an active member of the Hopedale Lions Club for 48 years.  He and Nan also owned and operated Now & Then Meals & Memories in Hopedale for over 20 years. He loved helping and serving the members of the community.

Donald's legacy of service, both military and civic, his devotion to his family, and his unwavering integrity will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Don was especially grateful for the countless prayers and cards that he received from so many of his family and friends. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hopedale Medical Complex and the Illinois Cancer Center (Bloomington) in their valiant efforts to give Don the best possible care during his battle with pancreatic cancer.  

His visitation will be held on Monday, August 26th from 4-7 PM at Living Hope Community Church. Cremation has been accorded. Davis-Oswald Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hopedale Medical Complex, Christian Life Academy, Hopedale, Hopedale Lions Club, or Hopedale Fire Department.
