George D. Long, 89, of Mackinaw, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Hopedale Nursing Home.
He was born March 24, 1934, to Frank X. and Theresia Wurdinger Long. He married Mary Lang on February 20, 1960, in Maywood, IL, and she survives.
Surviving are his children, Michael (Alice) Long of Stanford, IL, Loretta (Eric) Kahle of Taylorville, IL, and Janet Long of Grays Lake, IL; five grandchildren, Kelly (Brandt) Bollman, Brent Long, Eddie (Kylie) Kahle, Katie Kahle, and Madelyn Kahle; four great grandchildren, Alexa, Alana, Quentin, and Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings, Kathrine, Carl, Pauline, Lena, Rose, Helen, Frank Jr., and Melvin.
He served for the United States Army.
George farmed for 62 years with his brother Melvin in Mackinaw, Minier, and Stanford area.
George loved woodworking, boating, hunting, and enjoyed going to the Lake of the Ozarks. He also enjoyed watching the boys taking over the farm and would lend a hand when needed.
He was a member of the Mackinaw Lions Club and Tazewell County Farm Bureau, where he served on the board.
He was an active member at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hopedale his entire life, where his funeral mass will be at 10:00 am Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Father Geoffrey Horton will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Minier Cemetery in Minier. Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hopedale or Minier Rescue Squad.
