Jim Higdon

James “Jim” “Higgy” Higdon, 80, of San Jose, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2020 at his home.

He was born February 9, 1940 in Delavan moving to San Jose at the age of 12.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Gertrude (Pullum) Higdon; three brothers, Raymond Jr., Ronald, and Kenneth; one sister, Bonnie Eyrse.

Jim married Sue Woll on August 11, 1961.  She survives as well as their three children, Lori Carter of Hartsburg, Amy Bolen of Chatham, and Jamie Higdon of Mason City; eight grandsons, Dustin Bolen, Dakin (Nicole) Bolen, Cody (Holly) Bolen, Jacob Steel, Colton Higdon, Braden Higdon, Tristan Higdon, and Avery Higdon; two granddaughters, Chelsey (Tim) Rankin Hilgendorf and Lacey Shelabarger; five great granddaughters, Layla Parrish, Arielle Odor, Kinzley Bolen, Emerson Bolen, and Eislee Bolen; one great grandson, Roland Higdon; one brother, Robert Higdon of Jacksonville; and many nieces and nephews.

He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 16 years and then for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier in Mason City, retiring in 2007.

His many affiliations include retiring from the San Jose Fire Department with 60 years of service, American Legion Color Guard, San Jose Village Board, San Jose Park District treasurer, Allens Grove Township trustee, and election board.  He refereed and umpired for many years.  Jim never met a stranger.

He played fast pitch softball for many years and played on a bowling league in Delavan.

His funeral will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Delavan.  Allen Payne will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday and one hour before the service, both at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in San Jose with military honors by the Delavan American Legion Post 382.

Memorials may be made to San Jose Fire and Rescue.
