Kenneth “Lee” Smith, 88, of Mackinaw, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 12, 2026. Born on November 4, 1937, Lee grew up in Lily, Illinois, and lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and community.
Lee was the son of Walter and Eileen Hay Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. A proud graduate of Mackinaw High School’s Class of 1955, Lee remained deeply connected to the Mackinaw community throughout his entire life.
On June 22, 1957, Lee married the love of his life, Karen Lenox. Together they built a beautiful life and shared nearly 69 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, family traditions, and unwavering support for one another. Karen survives.
Lee worked at Keystone for many years before retiring in 1999. Beyond his career, he dedicated countless hours to serving his community. He served on the Mackinaw Village Board from 1969 to 1973 and later as Village President from 1977 to 1989. Lee also proudly served on the Mackinaw Fire Department for 34 years and was active in the Lions Club, including serving as President. His commitment to helping others and improving his community left a lasting impact on many generations.
A devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lee’s faith guided his life. Father Horton will officiate the funeral Mass.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and four sisters.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Karen Smith of Mackinaw, IL; daughters Peggy (James Sr) Dennis of Mooresville, IN; Janet (Bryon) Henneberg of Mackinaw, IL; and Kristi (Charles) Williams of Mackinaw, IL; one brother Joe Smith (Gloria) of Peoria, IL; one sister Helen Newell (Don) of Tremont, IL; and one sister in law Linda Smith.
Lee was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Alison Dennis, Lani Dennis, Caleb (Weslie) Williams, Aaron (Deborah Carvajal) Henneberg, Jesse Henneberg, Alissa (Jesse) Watkins, Drew (Jennifer) Henneberg, Whitney (Blake) Parrott and James Jr Dennis. He was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren, with one more eagerly anticipated in December.
Lee enjoyed the simple things in life most. He enjoyed casting a fishing line, hunting trips, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and spending time with family. He could always be counted on to passionately debate the Packers’ latest game, insist he caught the bigger fish, or share a good story with a grin on his face. In his younger years he loved heading north each winter to snowmobile and make memories with family and friends. One of his greatest joys was supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether sitting in the stands at sporting events and activities or helping out on the “Chain Gang” at Dee-Mack football games. His presence on the sidelines, his sense of humor, and his steady support will be deeply missed.
He also deeply cherished the many friendships he built with the neighbors and friends on Brendalyn Drive over the years. The conversations, laughter, and memories shared there brought him great joy and were a meaningful part of his life.
The visitation will be held Monday, May 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hopedale, IL. Following the service, the family welcomes you to join them for lunch at the Mackinaw Community Center. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mackinaw Fire Department.
Lee’s family would like to thank everyone for the love, prayers, and support shown during this difficult time. His legacy of service, humor, faith, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew and loved him.
