Lois Waggoner Obituary

Lois Champion Waggoner was born to Clair and Dorothy Champion of Port Republic, New Jersey on February 21, 1948. She passed away on February 12, 2023 at her home in Delavan, Illinois.

She graduated from Asbury College (Kentucky) with a BA in Education. After meeting at Asbury, she married Carl Waggoner, her husband of 52 years.

She had a true passion for teaching and was known for her dedication and care for all of her students. Her teaching experience ranged from small schools in Kentucky to the inner city schools of Indianapolis, where she helped support Carl through 4 years of medical school and 1 year of internship. While they were missionaries in Kenya, she also taught missionary children on the mission station.

Lois took some years away from teaching to raise her children: Nathan, Stephen, and Rebecca. She was one of the most caring, loving mothers who did everything in her power to enrich the lives of each of her children and everyone she met.

A student herself, Lois earned a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language and completed a masters in library science. She served as a librarian at Fulton Middle School in Heath, Ohio before she became a professor at Ohio Christian University in the Education Department. There she imparted her love of education to future teachers. Supervising practicums and teaching literacy were some of her favorite roles. All who knew Lois felt she was a master teacher.

Lois suffered two severely debilitating strokes in 2013. Later, Lois and Carl moved into the home of their son Stephen and his wife, Rachel, in 2018. They made Delavan their new home where they became an active part of Crosswalk Fellowship. While living in Delavan, Lois enjoyed the grandchildren's sporting events, family activities, golf cart rides, and RV adventures. Lois was preceded in death by her parents (Clair & Dorothy Champion) and her sister (Elaine Nessleroade).

She is survived by an older sister (Ruth Hirons), a younger brother (Paul Champion), her husband, Carl Waggoner and three children: Nathan (Cydil) Waggoner, Stephen (Rachel) Waggoner and Rebecca Waggoner. She was especially proud of her seven grandchildren: Caleb, Joshua, Micah, Leah, Ellie, Elisha, and Reni.

Lois was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, Nonna, teacher, and friend. She believed the most important thing in life was to love God and others. She modeled this truth to all who knew her.

Her funeral will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Crosswalk Fellowship in Delavan. Her son, Pastor Steve Waggoner will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 am - 12:45 pm Saturday, at the church. Burial will be in Prairie Rest Cemetery in Delavan. Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Delavan is handling the arrangements.
