Patricia "Joanne" Scott-Hammond Obituary

Joanne, daughter of Lt. Col. Virgil E. and Josephine E. (Peck) White was born April 28, 1933 in Delavan, Illinois.  She attended Delavan Schools. Joanne married Marion Jean Scott on January 8, 1950 in Pekin, Illinois.  After 63 years of marriage, he went to be with the Lord on February 20, 2014.  Joanne and Marion had six children, Susan E. (Joe) Gibes of Sunnyvale, CA, Michael M. Scott of Hepzibah, GA (DOD 10/18/2021), Steven “Bruce” (Sandra) Scott of Delavan, Jill Marie (“Buffey”) Fogliano of St. Thomas, V.I. (DOD 04/22/2002), Julie L. Harris of Pekin, and David (Chrystine) Scott also of Delavan.

Joanne later married Cecil C. Hammond, Jr. on November 28, 2015 at the Delavan United Methodist Church and adding five more to the family, Terry (Kathy) Hammond, Theresa Hammond Fields, James “Jim” (Kim) Hammond, Kevin (Joe) Hammond, and Terry (Rich Klein) McCoy Weiss.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Col. Virgil E. White and Josephine E. White, her brother, William E. “Bill” White, who was killed in Korea, her sister, Susanne (White) Weeks Hoover, Bill White’s son (her nephew), James White Cabal, husband, Marion J. Scott, her son, Michael M. Scott, daughter, Jill Marie (Buffey) Fogliano, her grandson, Jason M. Harris, step granddaughter, Melissa McCarthy Reesike, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Clara Scott of Green Valley, Illinois, many Scott family members as well as Cecil Hammond’s parents, Cecil Sr., and Orva Hammond, and Cecil’s son, Terry Hammond.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Cecil C. Hammond, Jr., her children, Susan (Joe) Gibes, Steven “Bruce” (Sandra) Scott, Julie Harris, David (Chrystine) Scott, nine grandchildren, Christopher (Jodi) Scott, Dennis (Jeanne) Scott, Tonya Fogliano, Patrick Harris, Breah Scott, Kaitlyn Scott, Kayla Scott, Michelle Gibes, Scott (Kelly) Gibes, thirteen great-grandchildren, stepchildren Theresa Hammond Filed, James “Jim” (Kim) Hammond, Kevin (Joe Harris) Hammond, Kathy Hammond, Terry (Rich) McCoy Weiss, sixteen step-grandchildren, and twenty-eight step-great-grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Betty Weyhrich, Rita Scott, and Eva Jeanette Scott, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clair and Jeanette Hammond, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

Her life was one of service to God, family, community, and love of dance.  Joanne was a former member of the Delavan United Methodist Church where she was confirmed, active in many areas - Choir Director of the Cherub Choir, Wesley Choir, and directed the Cantata “God’s Love Gift” in 1974 before going to Brazil (São Paulo for 1 year and Piracicaba for 2 years) with her husband Marion, and son, David.  While living in São Paulo she was a member of Dance Troup under the direction of Maggie Le Tourneou.  São Paulo was a Sister City of Chicago with the dancers performing during that time. Also, at the American School and at a dinner dance to raise money for Lar Esperanga ( House of Hope) for abandoned children.  She also had the opportunity to dance at the Hotel Hilton in São Paulo.

Joanne was President of the Delavan Junior Women’s Club, President of the Delavan American Legion Auxiliary #382, and United Methodist Women multiple times.  She served as President of Peoria Day Women’s Aglow, and Morton Aglow, as well as a member of the Illinois West Central Area Board of Women’s Aglow.  She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Ralph Mills for 7 years at Hopedale Hospital from 1967 to 1974.  She was a member of the Delavan Ambulance Squad for 15 years.

Joanne taught dancing in Delavan for over 40 years and 3 years in Emden/Hartsburg and choreographed 4 Musicals for the Delavan High School.  She always enjoyed and loved her former students coming up and reminiscing of their tap, ballet, toe pointe, acrobatic classes and recitals.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 11th at the Prairie Bible Church in Delavan and a funeral service on April 12th at 10:00 am at the Church with burial at Prairie Rest Cemetery. Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Delavan is handling the arrangements.

 Memorial contributions may be made to the Delavan American Legion Auxiliary #382, Delavan Ambulance Squad, Prairie Bible Church or charity of donor’s choice.
