Shirley M. Cooper, 88, of Morton, IL, passed away Monday, June 1, 2026, at Apostolic Christian Restmor Home in Morton.
Shirley was born on February 20, 1938, in Pekin to Everett and Freda Mundon Hancock Sr. She married Arley E. Cooper on December 24, 1956, in Port Byron, IL. She is survived by her two sons, Michael (Cindy) Cooper of Mapleton and Sam (Tanya) Cooper of Morton; seven grandchildren, Everett (Tammy) Cooper, Matthew Cooper, Dr. Tyler (Dr. Lauren Sesemann) Cooper, Sydney (Michael) Stevens, Dr. Trace (Samantha) Cooper, Tess Cooper, and Rhys Cooper; and five great-grandchildren, Brevin (Emma) Greiner-Fortier, Aspen Fortier, Arley Stevens, August Cooper, and Penelope Cooper. Also surviving are her brother John (Penny) Hancock of Mackinaw, sisters-in-law Shirley and Nancy Hancock, and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; and five brothers, Everett Jr., Charles, Donald, Richard, and William Hancock.
Shirley worked for several local establishments, including Libby’s and The Cliftwood restaurant, but much of her life was dedicated to raising her sons and working alongside her husband. The couple owned and operated Cooper Concrete for over 25 years, in which Shirley handled bookkeeping and secretarial work. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who found joy in traveling the country in the camper with her husband, and cooking family dinners. She loved spending time with her family. When at home, she could frequently be found enjoying a Hallmark movie and working on word search puzzles. Nights spent fishing, listening to family stories, and eating her famous fried chicken dinners will be greatly missed by all her loved ones.
The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home in Mackinaw, IL. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be at Mackinaw Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Illinois in honor of her late husband.
The family would like to thank Karen, Kim, Shelby, and the rest of the staff of Apostolic Christian Restmor Home of Morton as well as Pam from OSF Hospice for the care given to Shirley during her brief stay.
