Thelma Alford Obituary

Thelma Joyce Wollmann Alford, 92, Hopedale, passed away Saturday Dec. 28, 2024 at the Hopedale Nursing Home

She was born December 24, 1932 in Yankton, SD to Dr. Michael J. and Estelle Lugibill Wollmann. She married Neil Alford Jr. on August 23, 1959 in Freeman, SD, and he passed away on March 27, 2004.

She is survived by her children, Lisa (Rob) Roy, Michael (Jodie) Alford, Annette (Rick) Mandock, and Rich (Amanda) Alford;  two nieces and nephew, Margaret (Jim) MaGee, Steven (Jeanne) Scanlan and Mary Scanlan; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Alford Jr.; two sisters, Marilyn Scanlan and her twin, Theda Wollmann; one niece, Jeanne Scanlan; one great-nephew, Richard Scanlan; and brother-in-law, Richard Scanlan.

Thelma received an associate of arts degree from Freeman Junior College in Freeman, SD and a nursing degree from Bethel Deaconess Nursing School in Newton, Kansas.

She worked as a nurse at Hopedale Medical Complex for 40 years.

In retirement, she volunteered at the Hopedale library and the Hopedale Medical Complex gift shop, continued to keep in touch with friends and family, and spoiled her grandchildren whenever she got the chance.

She was an active member of Hopedale United Methodist Church.

She was the best Mom ever, enjoyed family, music, sports, crossword puzzles, and reading.  She was a die-hard Cubs fan and sent many cards and letters to her friends and family.  She was a very giving person and we are better for having had her in our lives.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 am Friday, January 10, 2025 at Hopedale United Methodist Church.  Pastor Charles Graul will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.  Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Hopedale.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Hopedale or Hopedale Medical Complex.
