Thelma Giffhorn Obituary

Thelma Giffhorn, 100 years, passed away November 25, 2023.  She married Wilbur Giffhorn on December 17, 1955 in Los Angeles, California.  He preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters:  Linda (James) Skarin of Wheaton, Illinois and Dianna (John) Sandy of the Saint Louis area.  Also, surviving are eight grandchildren:  Kenton (Anna) Skarin, Kaitlyn (Matthew) Johnson, Kevin (Jennifer) Skarin, Kathryn (Isaac) Hawn, Karson Skarin, Scott Sandy, Michael Sandy, David Sandy, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Thelma graduated from Pasadena/Point Loma Collage, California where she was listed in Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities.  She also did graduate at Princeton Theological Seminary.

She taught kindergarten and first grade in California and Illinois.  Thelma was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Peoria Hosta Society, the Tremont Garden Club, and the Tremont Historical Society.

Thelma and her husband enjoyed farm life, traveling, hiking, snow skiing, and swimming.  She celebrated her 90th birthday by gold medaling in Senior Olympics International Sports Festival, Palm Desert, California.

Thelma’s goal in life was to be all that God had created her to be.  She was active in church programs at Hollywood Presbyterian Church (CA), Peoria Grace Presbyterian Church, and Cornerstone Baptist Church, Groveland, Illinois.  She authored two books:  Things to Do Just for Kids and Things for Kids to Do, published by Scripture Press.

Thelma had a zest for life.  She lived each day that God gave her to the fullest.  Active and alert her entire life, she always enjoyed people.  One could not be around her long before she would be talking about her love for Jesus.  Her greatest desire in life was to glorify God and to tell others about the Savior.

Her funeral will be at 12:00 noon Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Morton.  Pastor Jonathan Chadbourn will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
