Walter G. Good, 95, formerly of Armington, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.
He was born November 2, 1928, in rural Armington to Alvin and Bessie (Kaufman) Good. He married Lorene M. Nafziger on June 17, 1950, in Hopedale.
Surviving are his 2 sisters, Eileen Nafziger (of Hopedale IL) and Marilyn Kauffmann (South Carolina); his children, Elaine (Dale Bachman) Good of Putnam, Wendell (Sharon) Good of Pekin, Darrell (Marti) Good of Elmhurst, Joanne (John Yoder) Good of Wheaton, and Jeannette (Brian) Zeigler of Pendleton, IN; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; four sisters, Marcella Kossen, Oleta Bachman, Lola Kauffmann, Helen Mumaw, and a brother, John Good; and granddaughter, Amanda Good.
Walter was a farmer whose love of farming became a bridge for reaching out and helping others. He enjoyed coffee and chatting with neighbors at the local shop. He loved solving challenges, including puzzles of all types. He organized walleye fishing trips to Canada for years. He was a 4-H leader and Golden Harvest seed salesman, with a long streak of winning the Soybean King Award for highest sales. During winters, he loved bowling in the local league. Later, he and Lorene started volunteering with Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA).
He was an active member of Hopedale Mennonite Church, Midway Mennonite Church (he and Lorene helped start the church) and Roanoke Mennonite Church. For 20 years, he served at Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA) with Service Opportunities for Older People (SOOP), a part of Mennonite Mission Network (MMN) in Tucson, AZ.
His funeral will be at 10:00am Tuesday August 20, 2024, at Hopedale Mennonite Church, Hopedale IL. Pastor Jolene Miller and Pastor Jessica Litwiller will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Monday August 19th at the church. Burial will be in Hopedale Mennonite Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to CHRPA or to Menno Haven Camp and Retreat Center.
