Walter Hoffman Obituary

Walter M. Hoffman, 79, of Freeport, formerly of Delavan, passed away on July 13, 2022 at his home. He was born on August 25, 1942 in Pekin, to Otis F. and Florence L. (Shay) Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are two brothers, H. Wayne (Verbie) Hoffman and Wendel K. (Christine) Hoffman of Delavan; one sister, Rosemary Ann Gordon of Topeka, Kansas; several nephews and nieces and several great nephews and great nieces.

Walter graduated from Delavan Community High School in the class of 1960. He graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL with a Bachelor of Science Degree in physics and math in 1964, and received a master’s degree in education from Illinois State University in Normal, IL.

Walter taught physics and math at Mt. Morris High School in Mt. Morris, IL for four years and then taught physics and math at Freeport High School, retiring in 1992 at the age of 50 years old.

He was a member of the Delavan Baptist Church of Delavan, IL. Walter was also a member of the Delavan Masonic Lodge No 156 for 57 years, joining in December of 1963. He also served as Chaplain. He was a dual member of the Lena Masonic Lodge No 174, joining in 2004.

Walter served as an advisor for the Freeport Demolay for several years, receiving the honorary Legion of Honor.

He was a member of the Valley of Freeport Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. He served as director of several Scottish Rite Degrees and worked with the stage crew for the last several years.

Walt received the Meritorious Service Award (MSA) on June 5, 1992. He was a member of the Freeport York Rite Bodies, serving as secretary and recorder.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No 679 in Freeport for 43 years. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge No 617 for 50 years in Freeport.

A visitation will be from 10:30 am to 11:30 am Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Delavan, with a graveside service at 12:00 pm at Prairie Rest Cemetery in Delavan. Lunch will be served at the Presbyterian Church in Delavan, to which family and friends are invited.
