William Smith Obituary

William “Bill” “Smitty” Walter Smith, born July 19, 1945, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, after courageously facing various health challenges.  His pain and suffering are now at rest and may he find eternal peace with the Lord, sustained by his Christian faith.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Soe Soe; his children, Kathy, John, James; stepdaughter, Thanda; sister, Marianne; brother, Karl; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin “Mel” and Margaret “Peg” (Pierce) Smith.

Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968 and continued his service in the Air Force Reserve Unit in Peoria for many years.  Most recently, he participated in the Greater Peoria Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., where he visited the Vietnam Memorial to honor fallen fellow veterans.

In his younger years, Bill enjoyed flying Cessna-type aircraft, cherishing the freedom of the skies.  He dedicated over 35 years to Caterpillar before retiring in 2009.  His commitment to veterans was reflected through his role as Commander on the Minier American Legion.

Bill found great joy in sharing meals at local restaurants with his family.  His laughter, kindness, and love will be deeply missed.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vietnam Veteran of America (VVA)
